KUALA LUMPUR: On April 26, Faculty of Communication, Visual Arts and Computing (FVAC) successfully conducted an award ceremony, ‘Festival Cinemini 2017’ at Balai Seni Visual Negara.
The event was launched by the Director of Balai Seni Visual Negara, Ybhg Prof. Dato Dr Mohamed Najib bin Ahmad Dawa, supported by the Dean of FCVAC Prof. Dr Azmuddin Ibrahim and UNISEL Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman and set up by lecturers and students under Visual Arts department.
Among 12 categories contested, Studio Syndicate Production won five awards including the overall best short film for ‘13 Conspiracy’, directed, scripted and cinematography by Khairul Ariffin along with four other group members Muhammad Hazwan, Muhammad Nur Fadhil, Imran Irwan and produced by Ain Zafira.
Following the theme for this year’s Festival Cinemini 2017, which is ‘Conspiracy’, Khairul Ariffin explained that the short film was inspired by 80’s style of work in cronies and double standard between colleagues. ‘13 Conspiracy’ short film revolves around a construction site company handling issues and family affairs internally between protagonist and antagonist characters with a twist of unexpected conflict risen up throughout the ending when the antagonist framed the protagonist to get his revenge.
“The idea is that even though we did our best and be good to others, there is always someone that will not be satisfied with us,” he said.
A final year student in UNISEL, he hopes that Festival Cinemini would encourage students to be more enthusiast in creating a project.
Unlike the previous year, this year Festival Cinemini 2017 is held outside of UNISEL for the first time in four years.
Prof Dr Azmuddin Ibrahim commented that Festival Cinemini 2017 was a great effort by students, motivated by the lecturers and served a great exposure for student’s works.
“We know very well, although in UNISEL we have yet to offer a course in film and animation, we are still able to organize an event that’s meaningful and as a result of this experience, students should be more marketable,” he added.
Festival Cinemini 2017 ended on a promising note, he said that the director of Balai Seni Visual have offered UNISEL an opportunity to work together and hopefully by next year UNISEL will have a national event growing out of this particular event.
